Steps to Research
1. Understand the Assigment: In order to succeed at the assignment, you need to make sure you understand all aspects of the project. Make sure you are aware of any topic restrictions and be aware of source, length, and formatting requirements. Also be aware of the paper timeline. Stay on task so that you can avoid falling behind.
2. Choose a Topic and Purpose/Thesis: Make sure that your topic is not too broad or narrow to avoid running into difficulties during the research process. Make sure your thesis can be answered. If you need help writing a thesis, try Indiana University’s Writing Tutorial Services page.
3. Create a Preliminary Outline: Prewriting is an important step that many students skip. Don’t fall into this trap. By creating an outline of your ideas before you begin researching, you are creating a researching map. Without a map, it is far too easy to stray off course!
4. Begin Locating Resources: Look for sources that are reliable, current and relevant to your topic. Use the GLHS library catalog to locate books that would help you. Use the GLHS databases to locate magazines, newspapers, journals and other great sources from our subscription databases. Use the internet as a last choice, but be careful to make sure that they are credible sources.
5. Create Source Cards: Consult the GLHS syle manual to make sure that you are using the right format.
6. Make Note Cards: Taking notes by highlighting important passages is helpful before making actual note cards. When you are ready to begin making note cards, make sure to use the GLHS style manual to make sure you are doing them properly.
7. Create a Formal Outline: Organize your note cards and create an outline so that you will create an organized paper. Check the GLHS style manual to make sure that you use correct formatting. Click here for a list of Roman Numerals.
8. Draft your Paper: This is a very important step in the writing process. Make sure you correct errors as you continue the drafting process.
